The Core at the College: Humanities

At the University of Chicago, students are shown how to think critically and analyze texts as a scholar. In addition, students also study a visual or a performing art form. The requirements for the Humanities, Civilizations, and the Arts sequence is as follows:



Students take a total of six quarters in humanities and civilization studies, selecting one of the following three options.
  1. A three-quarter humanities sequence; a two-quarter civilization studies sequence; and one course in the dramatic, musical, and visual arts.
  2. A three-quarter civilization studies sequence; a two-quarter humanities sequence; and one course in the dramatic, musical, and visual arts.
  3. A two-quarter humanities sequence; a two-quarter civilization studies sequence; and two quarter courses in the dramatic, musical, and visual arts.
 The  Humanities options are below. In addition to the requirements in humanities, students have to take Humanities Writing Seminars (19100) that introduce the practice and analysis of expert academic writing.
